Letters, 1747-1777.

Letters of Andrew Elliot to his family in Europe, 1747-77, mostly from Philadelphia and New York. The letters give a comprehensive and continuous picture of American affairs: the French & Indian War, Stamp Act controversy, and Declaration of Independence. In the earlier period Elliot was engaged in trade; at the time of the Stamp Act he held an official position in the New York customs.
